Why does my site appear on Google but not in ChatGPT?
The reason is in the index — ChatGPT doesn't use Google, and understanding this changes the entire strategy
Your site appears on Google but not in ChatGPT because ChatGPT doesn't use Google. When ChatGPT performs real-time searches to answer questions, it queries Bing's index — not Google. This means all the SEO work done for Google doesn't automatically translate into ChatGPT visibility. They are two different games with different rules.
Why ChatGPT uses Bing and not Google
Microsoft is an investor in OpenAI and integrated ChatGPT with Bing since 2023. When the user activates web browsing in ChatGPT — or when the model decides it needs real-time information to answer — it consults Bing's index through Microsoft's search API. Google has no access to this integration.
This creates an unusual situation: a site that has never done Google SEO can appear in ChatGPT if it's well-indexed on Bing. And a site with strong Google presence can be completely ignored by ChatGPT if it has never been registered or crawled by Bing.
Other reasons that prevent appearing in ChatGPT
robots.txt blocking GPTBot: ChatGPT uses the GPTBot agent to crawl content and build the model's internal knowledge. If your site's robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ChatGPT has no access to the content. This blocking is sometimes accidentally configured during generic bot protection measures.
No sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools: sites that have never registered their domain in Bing Webmaster Tools have slow and irregular crawling. The sitemap accelerates indexing of new and modified pages.
Content that doesn't directly answer questions: ChatGPT uses RAG systems that extract specific content snippets. Institutional pages, product landing pages, and marketing copy are rarely cited — because they don't answer questions with concrete data. Articles with direct answers, data, and heading structure work much better.
Insufficient topic authority on Bing: even with correct Bing indexing, sites with few pages on a specific topic have a lower chance of being cited. Topical coverage matters.
How to check if your site is on Bing
The fastest diagnosis is to access Bing Webmaster Tools (webmaster.bing.com) and check if the domain is registered, how many pages are indexed, and if there are crawling errors reported. Compare this with the number of pages indexed in Google Search Console — the difference between the two is usually revealing.
A second check: search on Bing (site:yourdomain.com) and compare the result with the same search on Google. If the page count on Bing is much lower, there's work to do.
What to do to appear in ChatGPT
- Register the domain in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit the sitemap
- Check that GPTBot is allowed in robots.txt (or explicitly add it)
- Create content structured for extraction: articles with direct answers, concrete data, and hierarchical headings
