What is zero-click traffic and how does AIO relate to it?

Zero-click traffic occurs when the user gets the answer they were looking for directly on the search engine results page — without needing to click any link. With the arrival of Google AI Overview, this trend has intensified: when the generative block is present in results, only 8% of users click on links. AIO doesn't solve zero-click — but it changes how brands extract value from it.

What causes zero-click traffic

Zero-click is not new. It has existed since Google started displaying direct answers in search results — the so-called featured snippets, knowledge panels, and answer boxes. What changed with generative AI is the scale: AI Overview transforms a much larger number of informational searches into direct-answer experiences.

The types of content most affected are exactly those that attract top-of-funnel informational traffic: - Questions like "what is", "how does it work", "what's the difference" - Comparisons between products, services, or concepts - Market data and statistics - Guides and tutorials with clear answers

For these topics, the expectation that good ranking will bring clicks is being rewritten. Research shows users prefer the AI's synthesized answer over clicking through 3 or 4 sites to piece together the answer themselves.

The difference between zero-click and invisibility

Being in zero-click is not the same as being invisible. There are two distinct situations:

Zero-click without citation: the user receives the AI's answer, the brand is not mentioned as a source. Here, the company missed the visibility opportunity — traffic went to zero and the brand gained nothing.

Zero-click with citation: the user receives the AI's answer, the brand is cited as a source — with the domain name appearing in the AI Overview block or as a numbered reference in Perplexity. Here, the company lost the click, but gained brand exposure. The user saw that FRT Digital (or any other company) is a reliable source on the topic.

AIO doesn't eliminate zero-click — it positions the brand to extract maximum value from zero-click, ensuring it's the cited source even when the user doesn't click.

How to measure zero-click impact on your business

Google Search Console now reports impressions and clicks from AI Overview separately from traditional organic results. This allows comparison of:

  • AI Overview impressions: how many times your site was shown as a source in AI Overview
  • AI Overview CTR: what percentage of those impressions generated clicks (typically very low)
  • Traditional organic impressions: to compare what's changing over time

For Perplexity and ChatGPT, there's no equivalent reporting dashboard. Monitoring needs to be done manually — testing your market's strategic queries periodically and recording which sources are cited.

What changes in content strategy with widespread zero-click

The success metric changes: Google ranking and click traffic stop being the only presence indicators. Citation in AI responses — even without a click — becomes a relevant KPI.

The goal of informational content changes: top-of-funnel articles increasingly have less objective of generating direct clicks and more of building brand authority that appears in AI responses. Conversion happens at another moment, when the user already knows the brand from the generative context.

Content needs to be "citable" before "rankable": an article written to be the best possible answer to a specific question — with data, structure, and direct response — is simultaneously what performs best in traditional ranking AND what has the best chance of being cited by AI.

Branded content matters more: being frequently cited in responses about your market builds the association between the brand and topic expertise. This is the awareness mechanism of zero-click — different from the direct click, but equally real.
