What is conversational intent and how to map it?
How to identify the real questions users ask generative AIs — and create content to answer them
Conversational intent is the real objective behind a question asked to a generative AI — what the user wants to get from that response: information, comparison, recommendation, decision validation, or a step-by-step guide. Mapping your segment's conversational intents is the starting point of an efficient AIO strategy because it defines what content to create, in what format, and at what depth. The difference between conversational intent and an SEO keyword lies in granularity: instead of "life insurance," the conversational intent is "what is the minimum life insurance coverage to protect my family if I die before retirement?"
The five types of conversational intent
### 1. Informational The user wants to understand a concept or phenomenon. Not yet in a decision-making process.
> "How does the Federal Reserve set interest rates?" > "What is fibromyalgia?" > "What is a safety stock buffer?"
Ideal content: explanatory article with definition, context, and examples.
### 2. Comparative The user is evaluating alternatives. High potential of an imminent decision.
> "What is the difference between an LLC and an S-Corp?" > "Shopify or WooCommerce: which is better for a clothing store?" > "Health insurance with or without a deductible: which makes more sense?"
Ideal content: structured comparison with a table or side-by-side criteria list.
### 3. Decisional / recommendation The user wants the AI to indicate the best option for their specific situation.
> "What is the best bank for a startup's business checking account?" > "What life insurance for a family with young children and $150K household income?" > "Which e-commerce platform for someone selling handmade crafts on Instagram?"
Ideal content: recommendation guide with explicit criteria and user profile descriptions.
### 4. Procedural The user wants to know how to do something — step by step.
> "How do I file a small claims court case?" > "How do I apply for FMLA leave?" > "How do I register a trademark with the USPTO online?"
Ideal content: numbered step-by-step guide with operational details.
### 5. Validation The user has a hypothesis or decision formed and wants to confirm they're correct.
> "Can I fire an employee for excessive absences without just cause?" > "Is it true that LLC profits aren't subject to self-employment tax?" > "Is it correct that you can use a co-signer for a mortgage if you have bad credit?"
Ideal content: direct answer (yes/no with conditions), followed by an explanation of exceptions.
How to map your segment's conversational intents
Method 1: simulate the user in AIs
Access ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini and simulate the questions your ideal customer would ask during the research, evaluation, and post-purchase phases. Record the exact questions, the response formats generated, and which sources are cited.
Method 2: support analysis
Questions received via email, chat, WhatsApp, and during sales meetings are real conversational intents. Categorize by type (informational, comparative, decisional, procedural, validation) and identify the most frequent topics.
Method 3: People Also Ask (PAA)
Google's "People Also Ask" block reveals how people naturally phrase their doubts. For each topic in your segment, do the Google search and record the question variations in PAA.
Method 4: AI autocomplete
Type the beginning of a question in ChatGPT or Perplexity and observe the completion suggestions — they reveal conversational intent patterns that other users have already expressed.
