What is AIO (AI Optimization) and why does your brand need it?

The practice that determines who appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews responses

AIO — AI Optimization — is the practice of optimizing a website's content and technical structure so that generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews recognize, understand, and cite it in the responses they deliver to users. Rather than pursuing positions in link lists, AIO pursues something different: being the source AI chooses when someone asks a question about your market.

Why did AIO emerge now?

Search is changing structurally. When a user asks ChatGPT which bank to open a business account with, which agency to hire for a digital project, or how to solve a specific technical problem, they receive an answer — not ten links to click. This shift has direct consequences for any company that depends on digital visibility.

The numbers confirm the scale of this movement: 44.9 million Brazilians used AI assistants in December 2025, a 61% increase year-over-year (Comscore). Brazil is the third largest ChatGPT market globally, with approximately 140 million messages processed daily. Google AI Overview — the AI-generated response that appears above traditional links — is now present in 18% of all Google searches. And when it appears, only 8% of users click any link in the list below.

If your brand isn't cited in that response, it doesn't exist for a growing portion of your audience — even with a well-built website and strong traditional Google presence.

Does AIO replace SEO?

No. SEO remains the technical foundation without which no AI finds your content. The difference lies in the end goal: SEO pursues positions in result lists, where the user still needs to click to visit your website. AIO pursues direct citation in AI responses, where the click may not happen — but the mention of your company builds authority and generates intent to contact.

They are complementary layers, not alternatives. A website without a solid technical foundation won't be crawled by AIs. A website with a good technical foundation but poorly structured content will be crawled, but not cited.

The two pillars of AIO

AIO is organized around two practical pillars:

Pillar 1 — Technical foundation (SEO for AI): opening AI bot access to your website (correct robots.txt, no blocks for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot), ensuring correct content rendering (SSR or SSG, no pure client-side rendering), implementing Schema.org structured data, and creating the llms.txt file — which describes to language models how to navigate your website.

Pillar 2 — Generative citability (GEO): structuring content so that RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) systems can extract clear, trustworthy assertions. This involves writing with factual density, demonstrating authority through data and sources, organizing content with semantic headings, and building topical authority over time.

Which companies need AIO?

Any company that depends on digital demand generation and whose audience uses generative AI to search for information — which, in 2026, includes virtually all B2B markets and most B2C markets with meaningful average ticket sizes.

The urgency is greatest for companies in consultive markets: technology, professional services, healthcare, education, finance. In these segments, users ask AI before making any commercial contact. Those who don't appear at that stage don't enter the consideration set.

Where to start?

The first step is understanding where your brand stands today: whether AIs can crawl your website, whether your content is structured for extraction, and whether you appear when someone asks questions about your market. That diagnosis — the AIO Score — is the starting point of any strategy.

FRT Digital developed a proprietary AIO methodology covering technical diagnosis, Schema.org implementation, content restructuring, and ongoing monitoring.
