How to make your brand appear in ChatGPT responses?

The technical and content steps to be cited by the world's largest AI assistant

To appear in ChatGPT responses, your brand needs to meet three conditions: be indexed in Bing (ChatGPT's real-time search source), have content structured so that AI systems can extract direct answers, and allow OpenAI's bots to access your website. The good news is that all three conditions are technical — they have concrete, measurable solutions.

Why Bing is critical for ChatGPT

ChatGPT uses Bing's index as its real-time information source. This means a website can have excellent Google rankings and be completely invisible to ChatGPT — if it doesn't appear in Bing. And the reverse is also true: new websites with little domain authority can be cited by ChatGPT by ranking well in Bing, which has different quality criteria than Google.

Step 1: Allow OpenAI bots in your robots.txt

The first step is ensuring OpenAI's bots can crawl your website. Check that your domain's robots.txt file does not block the following agents: GPTBot (ChatGPT's crawler) and OAI-SearchBot (used in real-time search).

If your robots.txt contains a User-agent: * directive with Disallow: / or explicitly blocks these agents, ChatGPT cannot read your content — regardless of how good it is.

Step 2: Index your site in Bing

Access Bing Webmaster Tools (webmaster.bing.com) and register your domain. Submit your XML sitemap to accelerate indexing. Check which pages of your site are already indexed using the site:yourdomain.com operator directly in Bing.

Prioritize pages that answer questions about your market: articles, FAQs, service pages with detailed descriptions. These are the pages ChatGPT will search when responding to queries related to your business.

Step 3: Structure content for AI extraction

ChatGPT looks for content that answers questions directly and densely. Vague texts, with a lot of repetition or that avoid giving objective answers, are ignored. To increase citation chances:

  • The first paragraph of each page should directly answer the page's main question
  • Use clear headings that describe what each section covers
  • Include numerical data with cited sources — AI systems value verifiable assertions
  • Write explicit definitions: "X is..." before explaining the concept
  • Avoid long introductory texts that don't deliver information

Step 4: Implement Schema.org

Schema.org structured data works as a reading guide for AI systems. They describe who the company is, what it does, which services it offers, and what each content page covers — without ambiguity.

To appear in ChatGPT, the most relevant schemas are: Organization (company identity), Service (for B2B companies), FAQPage (answers to frequently asked questions), and Article or BlogPosting (for editorial content). All should be implemented in JSON-LD.

How long does it take to appear?

Improved citation in ChatGPT typically appears four to eight weeks after the first optimizations, depending on the current domain authority and Bing's reindexing speed. Monitoring is straightforward: regularly search the most relevant questions in your market on ChatGPT and observe whether your company appears as a cited source.

FRT Digital executes this complete process — from diagnosing technical blocks to Schema.org implementation and content restructuring. The most direct entry point is the free AIO Score audit, which shows in minutes where your company stands and what needs to be fixed first.
