How does Google Search Console help monitor AI Overview visibility?

What Search Console's AI Overview reports reveal about your presence in Google responses

Google Search Console began offering specific data on Google AI Overview in 2024, allowing site owners to see which queries are generating impressions with AI Overview active and how it affects CTR. For marketing teams, this data is fundamental for understanding the real impact of AI Overview on organic traffic — and for identifying where the site is being cited in Google responses.

What is AI Overview and why monitor it in Search Console

Google AI Overview is the AI-generated response block that appears at the top of some Google results pages — currently present in approximately 18% of global searches. When AI Overview is present, the CTR of organic results below it drops significantly: only 8% of users click on any link, compared to much higher rates in searches without AI Overview.

For companies that depend on Google organic traffic, this means that part of the traffic that previously arrived via clicks is now consumed by AI Overview — with the response delivered directly on the SERP. Search Console is the official tool to measure this impact.

How to access the AI Overview report in Search Console

The report is integrated into the standard Performance Panel in Search Console. To access it:

  1. Access the site property in Search Console
  2. Go to "Performance" > "Search results"
  3. Click "Search type" and select "AI Overview" (available as a separate filter)

This displays impressions, clicks, average CTR, and average position specifically for queries where AI Overview was shown. Comparing these data with standard search result data reveals AI Overview's impact on site traffic.

What AI Overview metrics reveal

The report data allows answering critical questions:

  • Which queries are generating AI Overview? This is the universe of searches where your company may or may not be cited in Google's responses
  • Did CTR drop for these queries? A low CTR with many AI Overview impressions indicates the response is being consumed without a click
  • Are there AI Overview queries where the site has a high organic position but low CTR? This pattern indicates AI Overview is intercepting traffic before the organic click

This diagnosis is especially useful for identifying content that needs reformatting to increase citability in AI Overview itself.

How to use this data to optimize for AI Overview

When Search Console shows that a query generates AI Overview but the site isn't being cited in the response, the action is clear: review the corresponding article to improve citability. The most effective adjustments include:

  • Adding a direct answer in the first two paragraphs
  • Reformulating the H1 and H2s as direct questions
  • Including numerical data and concrete examples
  • Implementing Schema.org FAQPage if the content is FAQ-style

Search Console limitations for complete AIO monitoring

Google Search Console exclusively covers Google AI Overview — it doesn't provide data on citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini outside of AI Overview. For complete AIO monitoring, Search Console must be supplemented with AI referral traffic analysis in GA4 and manual testing protocols on other platforms.

FRT Digital uses Search Console as part of the AIO monitoring dashboard for its clients. Learn about the AIO service or start with the free AIO Score audit.
